Light snow system speeding up, probably covering Michigan before holiday period is over
M.Nguyen3 months ago
The end of the weekend should have fairly widespread snow moving across all of Michigan. Here’s the timing and the snowfall outcome. First, you should know this will not be a big snowstorm compared to what we get used to in Michigan during the heart of winter. On the other hand, you should know this will likely be the first time this year that a thin coating of snow is on many Michigan roads. Yesterday I wrote about this weather system arriving with light snow Sunday night, when most of us have traveled back from holiday gatherings. Today all of the data is showing a weather system arriving about six hours earlier. This means sometime Sunday afternoon light snow will start across all of Michigan. The western part of Lower Michigan and the Upper Peninsula should even have snow by noon Sunday. Here’s the forecast of rain and snow areas from Saturday night to Sunday evening. It shows light snow with the lightest shade of blue. This is a snowfall rate of an inch every six hours. Rain and snow areas in six-hour increments from 7 a.m. Sunday to 7 p.m. Sunday from the European Medium Range Weather Forecast Model.NOAA The Euro Model as we call it is a good model. Below is the U.S. model in the same time frame. The U.S. model shows the same situation with light snow developing, but already by noon Sunday. Note that the U.S. model is known to run six hours too fast on precipitation areas. Rain and snow forecasts in six-hour increments from 1 a.m. Sunday to 7 p.m. Sunday.NOAA How much snow can we expect? The overall situation shows it’s a light snow with our winter-hardy mentality. Let’s look at both the European model and the U.S. Model. Remember - although it’s called the European Model it still forecasts for the U.S. The European Model says all of us could have up to one inch of snow during the day Sunday and up to 2 inches north of Traverse City through the Petoskey area. This certainly isn’t heavy snow but the first inch of snow is the slickest inch. Total snowfall forecast from the European Model from 7 a.m. Sunday to 7 p.m. Sunday.NOAA The U.S. model is just a touch heavier at one to 2 inches of snow across much of Lower Michigan and a third inch possible along the northwest shoreline. Total snowfall accumulation from the U.S. model from 7 a.m. Sunday to 7 p.m. Sunday.NOAA So if you are driving back into Michigan Sunday afternoon get ready for your first little bout of winter driving. If you slow down a touch you should be fairly safe. It looks like Mother Nature is going to ease us into winter this year. Some years she hits us with one of our biggest snowstorms to start winter.
