Lima man deemed incompetent for trial in stabbing

Nov. 12—LIMA — A Lima man has been deemed temporarily incompetent to stand trial Friday in the Allen County Common Pleas Court due to mental illness after facing two counts of felonious assault.

Walton Upshaw, 67, will be committed to the Northwest Ohio Behavioral Healthcare Hospital in Toledo.

According to testimony at a previous municipal court hearing, on Sept. 18, Upshaw allegedly attacked his sister's fiance, Jeffrey Berger, with a two-foot-long knife at Berger's residence at 936 Dingledine Ave. after a physical confrontation.

"He came at me and poked me with the knife and began pushing it into me," Berger said at the previous hearing. This resulted in lacerations to his groin and thigh which needed stitches and a two-day hospital stay.

Detective Sean Neidemire of the Lima Police Department testified he had interviewed Upshaw following the incident and noted the defendant admitted he had tried to stab Berger.

An arrest report gives more details about what occurred before a man was shot to death Wednesday in the 3200 block of West Edgewood Avenue. Investigators observed surveillance video that showed the victim driving an orange Chevrolet Camaro with orange rims at the intersection of Edgewood Avenue and New Kings Road, according to the JSO arrest report for Lavertis Reed, 20, who was charged with murder in the shooting. As the victim's vehicle crossed the intersection, a white vehicle with dark rims was observed on the surveillance video driving south at a high rate of speed on New Kings Road, the arrest report states.

Former U.S. Rep. Michael Grimm, a New York Republican who resigned from Congress following a tax fraud conviction, is paralyzed from the chest down after being thrown from a horse during a polo tournament, according to friends who are raising funds to pay for the ex-lawmaker's medical care. Grimm, 54, suffered the devastating injury in September and is now being treated at the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in New Jersey, where the late actor Christopher Reeve was treated after a similar equestrian accident in 1995, according to Vincent Ignizio, a friend of Grimm's who is a former New York City Council member. "It was a passion of his and he suffered a tragic accident at the end of September," said Ignizio, who has set up a GoFundMe account to pay for Grimm's medical care.

A senior police officer warned Tuesday of calls for more rioting in Amsterdam, after dozens of people armed with sticks and firecrackers set a tram on fire Monday night and the city faces tensions following violence last week targeting fans of an Israeli soccer club.
