Live flash-bang caught by security at Pittsburgh International Airport

PITTSBURGH (WKBN) — The Allegheny County Police Department announced that charges were filed against a West Virginia man after he brought a live flash-bang grenade into the airport.

Just after 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, police reported that Zachary Velling, 25, of Morgantown, West Virginia, was discovered with a live flash-bang grenade at the main security checkpoint at the Pittsburgh International Airport. Officers observed the flash bang within Velling's bag during the checkpoint.

A bomb-squad technician was called to the airport and confirmed the grenade was live, authorities say. It was removed from the airport safely and the FBI was notified of the incident.

Velling is facing two misdemeanor charges for prohibitive offensive weapons and criminal attempt – carrying explosives on conveyances. He was arrested and taken to the Allegheny County Jail.

An arrest report gives more details about what occurred before a man was shot to death Wednesday in the 3200 block of West Edgewood Avenue. Investigators observed surveillance video that showed the victim driving an orange Chevrolet Camaro with orange rims at the intersection of Edgewood Avenue and New Kings Road, according to the JSO arrest report for Lavertis Reed, 20, who was charged with murder in the shooting.
