LIVE: Polling places open on Election Day with White House, Congress up for grabs
It's Election Day in the United States and millions of Americans are casting ballots and waiting to see who the next president will be and which party will control Congress for the next two years.
All eyes are on the seven battleground states as the race between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris as the 100-plus day sprint to Election Day is coming to a close. But there are also important down-ballot races, including the House and Senate, that are up for grabs along with governor races and ballot initiatives in states on issues like legalizing marijuana and abortion access.
Trump will spend the night at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida to host an Election Night party. Harris has chosen to spend the evening at her alma mater, Howard University, in Washington.
Voting started early Tuesday morning on the East Coast and will run into the night as Americans on the West Coast head to polling centers to cast a ballot.
The latest developments as votes are cast and counted across the country (all times Eastern):
Polling places across the Eastern U.S. are opening their doors as Americans show up to cast their ballot on Election Day. Among those are two key prizes in the Electoral College, Pennsylvania and Georgia, that opened up for voting at 7 a.m.
