K.Smith3 months ago

The Union Springs boys basketball team came up short in the finals of the Lansing Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday.

The Wolves dropped the championship game to Lansing 67-53. The Bobcats led by one at the half, 24-23, but a run late in the third quarter gave them a lead of nine heading into the fourth.

"We could never get back into the flow and that run really decided the game," coach Dan Cerro told The Citizen.

Leading scorers for Union Springs were Rocco Testa with 22, Aaron Johnson with 13 and Collin Park with 11. Johnson was named to the all-tournament team.

Boys hockey

Skaneateles 2, Fayetteville-Manlius 1: The Lakers opened their season Friday with a win over the Hornets. Andrew Gaglione and Sean Kerwick each scored, and goalie Danny Angelina had 10 saves.

Girls basketball

Mexico 49, Port Byron 44: The Panthers wanted to open their season with a difficult non-league game, and they got it from Mexico on Saturday.

"One of our goals this year is to not chase any false positives," coach CJ Kudla told The Citizen. "We want to play bigger schools (and) better teams and get better game in and game out."

Leading Port Byron in the loss was Abby McKay with 20 points, followed by Emma Taylor with nine.

Kudla said the team's defense, rebounding and speed were good in the defeat, but they couldn't make the most of their opportunities.

"As the season goes on that phase will get better. We have to control what we can control: defense, rebounding and dictating the speed of the game, and we did that," he said. "Unfortunately we can't control if shots are going in all the time. Can't wait to get back to practice on Monday!"
