UNICOI, Tenn. (WJHL) — A local veterinarian clinic owner is stepping up to provide care to animals who were affected by recent flooding in the Unicoi County area.

Dr. Karen Shelton, Unicoi Animal Hospital's owner, told News Channel 11 that she was approached about an urgent need for vet care in the county as more families began to express their pets' conditions.

"So we were contacted less than 48 hours ago to set up some sort of clinic to help pets who might have been affected by the flood," she said. "So we have hurriedly put together a clinic and actually had some other veterinarians come in from other places to help us today."

She said she and other vets from outside of the county banded together to perform wellness checkups on pets.

"So, you know, just trying to do our part. Can't really help shovel a lot of things or move a lot of heavy equipment, but we can help people's pets and sometimes, you know, that's their most important thing to them, even more important than their other possessions."
