Local wildlife officer awarded for life-saving actions
COLUMBIANA CO., Ohio (WKBN) — A Columbiana County wildlife officer was recognized in Columbus for his life-saving actions earlier this year.
After a child was hit by a riding mower in July, Officer Jesse Janosik was the first responder to arrive and jumped into action. Now, he is the recipient of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Director's Valor Award.
"Officer Janosik is a hero for his actions while helping to save the life of a child," said ODNR director Mary Mertz. "We are forever grateful to Officer Janosik for his service to his community and to all Ohioans."
The department said his actions greatly affected the child's survival and he demonstrated many outstanding qualities, including courage, calmness, clear-headedness and bravery.
Janosik began life-saving measures, communicating all the while with Columbiana County dispatch, relaying critical information about the situation, including the activation of a medical helicopter.
He also delegated duties to others on the scene and cared for the child's wounds until emergency medical technicians arrived. Finally, he assisted the Columbiana County Sheriff's Office after the child was transported.
