Longtime OBGYN surrenders license after 'pushing Jesus on a woman who had an abortion'

A Los Angeles gynecologist has surrendered his medical license for allegedly pushing Jesus on a patient who'd had an abortion.

Dr Lucien Cox, 75, also came under fire for reportedly performing a rectal exam on another patient without her consent.

In the interest of a 'prompt and speedy settlement' of the charges bought against him, including unprofessional conduct and gross negligence, Dr Cox agreed to his license being revoked and his 35-year career came to an end on Tuesday.

In a disciplinary filing by the Medical Board of California obtained by DailyMail.com, a 63-year-old unnamed woman went to Dr Cox in September 2021 for a routine examination and pap smear.

When a medical assistant asked her about her history of pregnancy terminations , the patient reported an elective abortion in 1987.

When Dr Cox returned to the room, the patient suggested that she stated to feel uncomfortable when he questioned her about her abortion and processed to ask if she 'had Jesus in her life.'

The filing states that when the patient replied that she was not religious, Dr Cox followed by with asking if she wanted to 'go to heaven and avoid the devil.'

The patient further alleged that Dr Cox stated that 'the devil is ruling that world' and that 'I was like you when I was young and that I will teach you about Christianity.'

The patient reported that Dr Cox continued this line of conversation for 15 minutes, during which time he encouraged the patient to attend his Bible study class which offered counseling for women who 'suffer from guilt 'following an abortion.

When the medical assistant was called back to the room, the filing states that Dr Cox proceeded to carry out a pelvic examination on the patient.

However, she said the procedure was 'extremely uncomfortable, much more than usual' and she 'abruptly left' the OBGYN office and did not respond to subsequent calls from Dr Cox.

She went on to file a formal complaint with the Medical Board of California less than a week later.

While looking into her case, investigators discovered another complaint filed against Dr Cox with the Los Angeles Police Department.

In October 2014 another female patient reported his 'inappropriate and unprofessional' behavior during a gynecological examination.

The 42-year-old woman said she booked an appointment with Dr Cox after experiencing 'painful and heavy' periods and bleeding in-between.

A previous ultrasound had also revealed fibroids.

The woman said had requested a female gynecologist and was disappointed when she discovered Dr Cox was male, 'nevertheless, she decided to stay for the evaluation since she had already arrived for the appointment.'

She found it odd when Dr Cox asked her about her sexual history when the medical assistant left the room, but he did not document the conversation or note it on the patient's medical chart.

The examination took an even more uncomfortable turn, the patient said, when the medical assistant returned and Dr Cox proceeded with the pelvic exam and said he was 'unable to feel her uterus because her bladder was full.'

The patient alleged that Dr Cox, who began practicing in 1979, then attempted to 'examine her uterus rectally without first warning her.'

She then reported that Dr Cox told her to empty her bladder and left the examination room but she was so disturbed she went to the restroom and 'called her sister for a ride, refused any further examinations, and left the office.'

She made a formal complaints against Dr Cox the next day to the LAPD.

The Medical Board of California filing notes that the investigation was completed but no criminal charges were brought against Dr Cox.

However, in light of this incident and the 2021 complaint, the Medical Board of California decided to take disciplinary action against Mr Cox.

In light of his dismissal, his attorney, Peter Osinoff, told the Independent if a hearing had occurred, [Mr Cox would not have lost his license, or been disciplined severely.'

He highlighted that Dr Cox had 'never been the subject of any prior disciplinary action during his lengthy career as a physician' and he denied that Dr Cox had been inappropriate with his religious views or attempted a rectal examination without consent.

Mr Osinoff concluded: 'Rather than proceed to a costly hearing, Dr Cox decided to surrender his license, as he had closed his office and had been planning to retire from the practice of medicine for some time.'

Zocdoc, a free online service that connects patients with healthcare providers to make appointments, describes Dr Cox as 'friendly and experienced as they come.'

His listed hospital affiliations are Monterey Park Hospital, Pacific Alliance Medical Center and the Southern California Healthcare System at Culver City.
