Look Back ... to Jacksonville's Businesswoman of the Year, 1949

Oct. 16—Oct. 16, 1949, in The Star: Mrs. R. K. Coffee, widely known Alabama newspaper and public relations woman, two nights ago was named Jacksonville's first "Business Woman of the Year." A crowd of several hundred Jacksonville residents was on hand in the community center to witness the presentation of the award. Associate editor of The Jacksonville News, Mrs. Coffee for 10 years has also been public relations writer for Jacksonville State Teachers College and special correspondent for The Anniston Star. Mr. and Mrs. Coffee came to the college town 12 years ago from Andalusia, where they were in the newspaper business. Mr. Coffee is currently publisher of The Jacksonville News. The couple have a daughter, Marion, who is a teacher at Saks School. Also this date: Plans for defraying expenses of The Hour Glass, the yearbook of Anniston High School, have been announced by Miss Jane Edwards, the publication's editor. She ad her staff are conducting a magazine subscription campaign which will last until Oct. 27. Hour Glass business managers Rose Holland and Vivian Killebrew are in charge of the campaign.

Oct. 16, 1999, in The Star: A new mall opened in Georgia this week, located right alongside I-20 on this side of Atlanta. Arbor Place Mall in Douglasville is a straight shot down the interstate, about 70 miles away. Containing the usual middle-class anchor stores, the mall also happens to boast the largest Old Navy clothing store in the Southeast. The movie industry is represented by Regal Cinemas, which has 18 screens just inside the mall's main entrance.
