Lurie Children’s doctor on the rise Entrovirus D68 in U.S.

A virus that can cause polio-like illness in children is spiking in the U.S. Researchers say they are seeing more evidence of it in wastewater collected around the country.

It's called Enterovirus D68.

The symptoms are usually mild and resemble the common cold.

But extreme cases have led to acute flaccid myelitis, or AFM, a rare neurological condition that can lead to muscle weakness, slurred speech, and even paralysis.
