Maine State Police investigating Bath shooting; shelter-in-place order lifted

Oct. 6—Authorities are investigating a shooting that happened Sunday morning in a residential part of Bath, causing police to briefly issue a shelter-in-place order for nearby residents.

The shooting happened just before 7 a.m. Sunday, Maine State Police spokesperson Shannon Moss said in a short news release.

Moss said there is no danger to the public and that state and local police are investigating. She did not say whether anyone had been injured or taken into custody in relation with the shooting.

Police at the scene near Oak Grove Avenue and Crawford Drive early Sunday afternoon also declined to comment on any potential injuries or arrests tied to the incident.

Authorities said state police would release more information on the shooting later Sunday.

Bath police Chief Andrew Booth told assembled media around noon Sunday that the shelter-in-place order had been issued "due to the uncertainty of the scene and what was going on. But once we determined everything was safe, we lifted that, and there's no danger to the public."

The order had been issued for the northern part of the city around 8:30 a.m. while officers responded to what was described at the time as a "situation" on Crawford Drive. At about 9 a.m., the shelter-in-place order was lifted.

Booth said officers have been in touch with residents of the area.

"Bath is a very close-knit community. Things like this don't happen a lot," the chief said. "Everybody knows everybody around here, and we're going to get through it as a community."

Dylan Harris, who lives nearby, expressed concern for his neighbors Sunday.

"All the kids in my neighborhood, I fear for them," he said.

But Harris said he felt reassured by the quick police response.

"It does have the entire city of Bath on concern," he said.
