Man accused of firing gun while getting off WRTA bus in Youngstown
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — A man who reports said fired a shot after getting off a bus is expected to be arraigned later Tuesday in municipal court.
Alfred Cooper, 49, was booked into the Mahoning County Jail Friday on charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm, a third-degree felony; carrying concealed weapons, a fourth-degree felony; obstructing official business, a fifth-degree felony; and discharging firearms within city limits, a first-degree misdemeanor.
Cooper was arrested after police were called about 3:25 p.m. to Glenwood and West Woodland avenues for a report of a man who got off a WRTA bus and fired a shot from a gun before walking away.
Cooper, who reports said fit the description of the person who fired the shot, was spotted by police at Glenwood and West Warren avenues. He failed to stop for police, reports said, and he ran away before officers caught up with him in a yard in the 1900 block of Volney Road.
Police searched a bag that Cooper was carrying and found a loaded 9mm semiautomatic handgun that was reported stolen in July; an airsoft gun; and two bags of marijuana, reports said.
A records check found Cooper is not allowed to have a gun because of a 1997 rape conviction in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court.
Reports said police looked for the bus driver but could not find the bus that Cooper exited.
No one was hurt.
