A man allegedly set fire to a Rumford home and fired a gun Tuesday evening, sending the area into a lockdown.

The man, whose identity hasn't been made public, crashed a vehicle into the home on Route 232 about 8 p.m., according to Rumford police Chief Tony Milligan.

He then allegedly set fire to the house, located in Rumford Corner village between East Bethel Road and South Rumford Road, before firing a gun into it and leaving, Milligan said early Wednesday morning.

Police ordered nearby residents to stay in their homes , and a Maine State Police tactical team came to the area to assist Rumford officers.

Police found the man suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound about 1 a.m. He was taken to Rumford Hospital and then transferred to Maine Medical Center in Portland to be treated for life-threatening injuries.

The shelter-in-place order has been lifted.

The shooting remains under investigation, and no additional information was immediately available.
