State police have charged a man with attempted murder in connection with an assault at the Meriden train station on Wednesday.

Troopers learned of the assault at 9:20 p.m. after officers with the Meriden Police Department said a woman walked into their lobby and reported that she had been assaulted earlier in the evening at the train station, according to Connecticut State Police .

The woman was taken to an area hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.

Once at the hospital, the woman told investigators that she was in front of the eastern side of the train station around 8:15 p.m. when a heavy-set man who she did know walked up to her and grabbed her from behind, according to state police. The woman said the male then threw her to the ground and began choking her.

The woman said she tried to escape but the assailant pinned her down using his body weight, when she started losing consciousness, according to state police.

State police said the victim only had a limited description of the clothing worn by the assailant. She told authorities that, after she regained consciousness, she found the nearest person to help her and drive her home, where her family encouraged her to report the incident.

State police went to the train station shortly before 11 p.m. in an attempt to locate the suspect. While there, they reviewed video surveillance cameras and corroborated what the victim had told investigators, according to state police. The video showed that the suspect fled the area following the assault, state police said.

State police said they gave Meriden officers a detailed description of the suspect and the two agencies began searching for the man. Just before 12:40 a.m., Meriden police told troopers they had detained a man who was "consistent in appearance" with the assailant.

State police said the man did not have the same shirt on but was wearing the same pants and shoes as the suspect seen on video. The man was identified as 37-year-old Curtis Demond Hemmingway of Meriden, according to state police.

Hemmingway was transported to Troop I in Bethany and charged with criminal attempt to commit murder, first-degree reckless endangerment, second-degree strangulation and second-degree breach of peace. He was held on $150,000 bond and was expected to be arraigned in Meriden Superior Court on Friday.

State police said the victim was ultimately released from the hospital.

"This appears to be isolated incident and there is no threat to the public," troopers said in a statement.
