Man charged with murder in connection to Bertie County shooting

BERTIE COUNTY, N.C. (WNCT) — A Colerain man was arrested and charged in connection to an Aug. 31, 2024 murder that happened at the Dollar General in Merry Hill.

Bertie County Sheriff's Office deputies responded that day in a reference to hearing shots fired around the side of the building. While on the way to the scene, deputies were told about a man lying near a vehicle where the shots came from.

They found William Thomas Johnson, 60, from Plymouth, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Johnson was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Robert D. Wilson has been charged with first degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Wilson was jailed in the Bertie/Martin Regional Jail without bond.
