Man found guilty in Savannah homicide shooting, DA’s Office says

CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WSAV)—The Chatham County District Attorney's (DA) Office announced the conviction of a man in Savannah.

Jamal Hicks has been convicted for the murder of Alphonso Oliver, Jr., according to the Chatham County DA's Office.

Hicks was found guilty of multiple charges, including Malice Murder, two counts of Felony Murder, Aggravated Assault and several firearm offenses following a jury trial before Judge John E. Morse, Jr. the DA's Office said.

The DA's Office said that in addition to the murder charges, Hicks was convicted of Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon and two counts of Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony.

They also said that Hicks has been sentenced to life without the possibility of parole.

The fatal incident occurred on May 3, 2022, on Brewer Street in Savannah where Hicks shot Oliver 13 times in the back following a verbal altercation earlier that day, the DA's Office said.

The case was investigated by former Savannah Police Department (SPD) Detective Rico Jordan, whose work provided the evidence that led to Hicks' conviction, the DA's Office said. Assistant District Attorney Renorda Herring lead the prosecution.

"Our deepest condolences to the family of Alphonso Oliver, Jr. and hope this conviction offer them a sense of closure and peace," the Chatham County DA's Office said.
