Man Gets Life Sentence For Killing Woman For $200K Pay-Out: Feds The woman was strangled to death, dismembered, and then discarded in a Brooklyn park.BROOKLYN, NY — Brooklyn federal court sentenced a man to life in prison on Wednesday for murdering and dismembering a woman to collect her $200,000 life insurance benefits, officials said.
Cory Martin, a 37-year-old from Queens, was found guilty of murdering 26-year-old Brandy Odom and dumping her body parts in a park in Brooklyn back in 2018, the United States Attorney of the Eastern District of New York said.
Martin, who operated as a pimp at the time, lived with Odom and a co-conspirator in a house in Rosedale, Queens, officials said. Both Odom and the co-conspirator engaged in commercial sex work for the defendant, according to the investigation.
In 2017, Martin and the co-conspirator both took out life insurance policies in Odom's name, and then watched crime-related TV shows to learn how to murder Odom and avoid getting caught by police, according to the investigation.
Then, in early April 2018, Martin strangled Odom to death and purchased a saw and cleaning supplies to hide the evidence before dumping Odom's body parts in Canarsie Park in Brooklyn, officials said.
Then, after Odom's murder, at Martin's direction, his co-conspirator made several unsuccessful attempts to claim benefits under Odom's life insurance policies, officials said.
"The defendant will spend the rest of his life in prison for this ghastly, cold-blooded crime that was motivated by greed and executed after extensive planning," United States Attorney Breon Peace said. "Brandy Odom's life mattered and I hope that this sentence, which protects our community by ensuring that the defendant cannot victimize another person, brings some measure of closure to her family."
