Man pleads guilty to second-degree murder in Bristol, Va. shooting

BRISTOL, Va. (WJHL) — A man accused of shooting two men in the head in Bristol, Virginia in 2022 has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.

Bristol Clerk or Court Kelly Flanagan confirmed Wynston Rhinehart entered a guilty plea on Tuesday in connection to the death of 29-year-old Christopher Carter.

Rhinehart, who had originally faced a first-degree murder charge, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the case. Additionally, Flanagan said he also pleaded guilty to aggravated malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of murder and use of a firearm in the commission of aggravated malicious wounding.

According to Flanagan, a pre-sentence report has been requested, and Rhinehart is due back in court for sentencing on Jan. 16, 2024.

Rhinehart's charges stemmed from a nighttime shooting on Dec. 8, 2022 in the 100 block of Harvey Lane. Carter and a family member of his were both found by police with gunshot wounds to their heads, court documents previously obtained by News Channel 11 read.

Both men were transported to the hospital, but Carter died due to his injuries.
