WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) — The Charlestown man accused of causing a crash that killed a 17-year-old East Greenwich girl in 2022 faced a judge on Friday.

Aramis Segura, 32, pleaded no contest to driving as to endanger resulting in death and duty to stop in an accident resulting in death.

Police believe Segura was speeding when he slammed into the back of Olivia Passaretti's car on I-95 South as she was driving home early on New Year's Day. Passaretti's car was forced off the highway and down an embankment, where it hit a tree and rolled over. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Segura, meanwhile, abandoned his car and took off running through the woods, according to police. He eventually connected with his then-girlfriend Alicia Peckham, who drove him back to their Charlestown home.

In August, Peckham was found guilty of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death as an aider and abettor, harboring a criminal, misprision of a felony, and obstruction of justice.

Passaretti's family told 12 News outside the courthouse they are relieved they don't have to go through a second trial.

"No time is enough time. They're just throwing numbers out and it doesn't matter, the numbers. My daughter doesn't get to come back after a certain amount of time," Olivia's mother, Janine Passaretti-Molloy, said.

"He gets a second chance. She doesn't," her sister Victoria added.

Peckham is scheduled to be sentenced in November and Segura will be sentenced in January.
