Man shot and killed by Montgomery County sheriff's deputies

Sheriff's deputies shot and killed a man Saturday after he brandished a chain saw, claimed to have a gun and threatened to open fire, according to the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office.

The incident began at 4:28 p.m., when authorities responded to an arson call in the 3800 block of Stanley Road. The caller told them a man had set fire to a residence.

When deputies arrived, the suspect fled into the woods, according to a news release from the Sheriff's Office. After a pursuit, the man brandished a chain saw and threatened to shoot the deputies.

"During the altercation the individual was shot by deputies," the news release stated.

Joshua W. Gallimore, 43, of Christiansburg, was pronounced dead at the scene. No deputies were injured.

The Sheriff's Office has requested Virginia State Police to investigate the shooting. No further information is available from the county at this time, the news release stated.
