A man was found shot to death in the middle of the street in a south Birmingham neighborhood.

The discovery was made Saturday morning on 24th Avenue South, just off the busy Green Springs Highway.

Sgt. Bryan Shelton said officers were notified about 6:30 a.m. and responded to the location. They arrived to find the man unresponsive and medics pronounced him dead on the scene.

Residents told police they heard some kind of commotion and then heard the shots.

No arrests have been made.

"It's early in the investigation and we do not have a motive,'' Shelton said.

"Truly any homicide is a tragedy and so our hearts go out to the family,'' Shelton said. "Our investigators will work to try to bring some closure to the family.''

The slaying marks the city's 131st homicide this year. Of those, nine have been ruled justifiable and two others happened in previous years, but the victims died in 2024.

In all of Jefferson County, there have been 165 homicides, including the 131 in Birmingham.

Anyone with information is asked to call homicide investigators at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
