(DuPage County State's Attorney's Office)WESTMONT, IL – A man this week stuffed his estranged wife's mouth with a towel smelling of chemicals and held a knife to her throat, Westmont police said.
Marco Renegado Evidente, 35, of Aurora, was arrested on felony charges of attempted murder and aggravated battery and misdemeanor charges of violation of an order of protection, domestic battery and endangering the health or life of a child.
The attack occurred the woman was heading to work about 5 a.m. Sunday, police said. Officers responded to a 911 call about her screaming for help in a parking lot in the 300 block of West Naperville Road.
Police allege that Evidente jumped on top of the woman and put a towel doused in something smelling of chemicals in her mouth.
He then slammed her head into the pavement and held a knife to her throat, according to a news release from DuPage County prosecutors. During a struggle, she was able to get the knife away from him, police said.
As officers arrested Evidente, the woman asked where their children, ages 2, 7 and 10, were. Evidente was supposed to be watching them at the time of the attack, police said.
In Evidente's backpack, officers found a 20-pound dumbbell, three large garbage bags about 6 feet long, multiple zip ties and directions to the Chatham Street Bridge over the Cal Sag Channel in Blue Island.
Evidente was out on bond on April charges alleging criminal sexual assault, authorities said. He had posted the required 10 percent of a $50,000 bond.
In September, the state eliminated cash bonds. On Tuesday, a DuPage County judge ordered Evidente jailed until his trial.
"The targeted attack by the defendant against this victim is beyond reprehensible," Westmont Police Chief Jim Gunther said in a statement. "I wish the victim a full recovery from her injuries. I would like to commend the good Samaritan who alerted police by calling 911 to this in-progress crime and remind the community that if you 'see something, say something.'"
