Manis For Grannies: Essex County Teen Boosts Spirits Of Local Seniors A high school student from New Jersey is trying to brighten the lives of older adults by offering "manis for grannies."

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — When Arianna Grossman was growing up, she found an outlet for her anxiety through painting her nails. Eventually, capitalizing on her blossoming cosmetology skills, the Glen Ridge High School senior started doing her friends' nails, finding joy in helping others to boost their self-esteem.

Now the Essex County teen is embarking on a new mission: to brighten the lives of older adults by offering "Manis for Grannies."

According to Grossman, she's trying to alleviate the isolation that many seniors encounter in their later years, replacing those negative feelings with "love and support." Painting nails and is a good way to show some hands-on support – literally, she says.

Aside from manicures, Mani's for Grannies also supports elderly individuals and offers a listening ear by spending time with them, Grossman pointed out. The teen said it's important to help make other people feel valued – it's something that boosts her own self-esteem, too.

With the aid of other high school volunteers, Grossman has been volunteering at places like Van Dyk Nursing Home in Montclair and Complete Care in West Caldwell to spread some love and carry out some stunning manicures.

The enterprising youth is a member of the National Art Honor Society and will be pursuing a career in fashion marketing next autumn. But in the meanwhile, she'll continue to put smiles on the faces of seniors throughout North Jersey.

"Watching one's confidence change in the span of just a few minutes from just a simple gesture shows me that though we may live with our insecurities, as women, we have the power to uplift each other and make each other feel cherished," Grossman said.
