Maria Jönsson studied textiles at Sigtuna Folk College in Sweden in the mid 1980s. She then went on to receive a BFA and MA in Studio Art Fiber/Fabric at Northern Illinois University in 1989/1991. During her years in Sweden she learned more traditional weaving techniques. In the US she explored and experimented with non-traditional materials in weaving such as metal, wire, or any material that could be woven on a loom.
After moving to New Mexico in the 1990s she continued to create and sell her fiber art while building a career as an archaeologist. A lot of inspiration for her art comes from documenting and writing about past cultures.
Maria enjoys hand-weaving, knitting, and some crochet in her work. Her fiber art ranges from clothing and accessories, floor rugs, to fine-art wall hangings and occasionally large public fiber art installations in architectural space.
Her current work continues to explore and incorporate recycled or re-used materials. She is still interested in integrating painted metal surfaces into woven structures, and transforming woven structures from 2-dimensions to 3 by using non-traditional materials.
