Martinsville's Octoberfest 43 was a big hit this year

Octoberfest in uptown Martinsville has been a mainstay in the community for more than four decades, but attendees at this year's event said this one felt extra special.

Maybe it was the hundreds of vendors that set up along Main and Church streets, or the larger than usual crowd that lined the streets, going from one vendor to another. Regardless, everyone appeared to be having a great time visiting with one another and basking in a glorious day of sunshine and nearly 80 degree weather on a Saturday afternoon.

Held in the heart of uptown Martinsville, the vibrant street festival opened at 11 a.m. and continued until 4 p.m., with various events after the festival planned at various locations uptown throughout the evening.

People attending enjoyed live bands, a beer garden, a plethora of arts and crafts by local and regional vendors, and food from American to German.

Children were treated to several bounce houses and age-appropriate activities, while teenagers lined the sidewalks enjoying carnival treats and talking and laughing with one another.

Families strolling babies and walking leashed dogs were common, and older ones among the crowd found places to spread lawn chairs and watch as people walked by.

Martinsville-Henry County Chamber officials suggested, based on early sign-up responses, that this year was shaping up to be one of the best Octoberfests ever. Vendors displayed handcrafter art and unique jewelry, holiday décor, and household treasures.

The event, now in its 43rd years, is entirely free and is commonly referred to as the "ultimate community gathering" in Martinsville.
