Sister Boniface Schuck, a member of the Mid-Atlantic Community of the Sisters of Mercy, died at Mercy Center, on Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012.

The former Cecilia Schuck was born on May 13, 1929 in Shamokin, PA., the daughter of George and Cecilia Bonvicin Schuck.

Sister attended St. John Elementary School and graduated from St. Edward High School in Shamokin. She received her degree in elementary education from Misericordia University and her master’s degree in geography from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Sister entered the Sisters of Mercy in Dallas, on Sept. 8, 1948, and professed her vows on March 12, 1951.

Many of her 41 years in the ministry of education were in the Diocese of Harrisburg. Sister returned to the Wilkes-Barre area in 1990 and ministered as an outreach worker in Project Remain. There she visited the elderly in high-rise apartments and assisted them with their daily activities. From 2009, Sister lived and volunteered at Mercy Center. Many of her former students and those she met in the apartments benefited from her prayers.

Sister is survived by her sisters, Betty Lukonis of Buffalo, N.Y., and Alice Broscius of Philadelphia; devoted nieces and nephews; and the Sisters of Mercy.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Margaret and Carolyn; brothers, Neil, Austin, Albert, George and John.

The celebration of her life will begin with prayer and visiting hours at Mercy Center on Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in Mercy Center Chapel with interment at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Carverton.
