Marylanders react to Angela Alsobrooks Senate victory

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, Md. ( DC News Now ) — Democrat Angela Alsobrooks took home the victory Tuesday night after beating Republican Larry Hogan in the race for the Maryland U.S. Senate. She is now the first Black woman to hold the seat.

According to the Associated Press, Alsobrooks won 52.2% of the votes, with Hogan bringing in 45%.

"I was very happy for us as a race of people and to see a Black woman be a senator, the first in Maryland," said George Eccles, a Prince George's County voter.

On Wednesday morning, many were feeling the excitement in Prince George's County.

"Awesome, we needed her there. We definitely needed her there," said Milton Newsome regarding Alsobrooks' win.

Some voters who did not vote for Alsobrooks told DC News Now off-camera that they like the fact that she's made history.

Alsobrooks addressed those who did not vote for her on Tuesday night, saying, "Those Marylanders whose support I have yet to earn, I may not have won your vote, but I want you to know that I hear your voice, and I will be your senator too." Voters say they're hoping she'll bring change to the federal level.

"I'm just looking forward to all the changes for jobs in the area, economics and also the crime," said Joan, who opted not to give her last name.

Alsobrooks says she's ready to head to Capitol Hill and make a difference.
