McKenzie Park redesign project features new playground equipment
BAY COUNTY, Fla. ( WMBB ) – In the city's plan they want to add artwork, music, and playground equipment to McKenzie Park.
Project designers have been receiving public input over the past two Downtown Improvement Board meetings.
The community liked playground equipment that was made of natural wood products and low maintenance. That's why they are looking at equipment that has a ten-year warranty.

They are looking at 18 pieces of playground equipment, ranging from $5,000 to $20,000 each.
The equipment layout will support the current park footprint.
"We actually have nestled the playground equipment under the existing oak trees, being mindful of the footprint of the oaks and pretty much range between the ages of two to 12," Senior Landscape Architect Patricia Castellano said.
The Panama City Kiwanis Club wanted to do something to serve children for their 100th anniversary coming up in April 2026. They will be funding a portion of the project and hope it's completed by their 100th anniversary.
"We know it's going to be a very expensive project, but it's a very worthwhile project. And it'll take an area that is so historical in our community and do something so exciting for our youth," Panama City Kiwanis Club President Stefanie Gall said.
There is also some funding available from the city and the Downtown Improvement Board. The additions to the park will be done in phases to help with costs.
The playground is just one part of the park's redesign project.
Designers say redoing the walkways might take more time. Now they are looking to create a master plan, including the cost estimates and project phases.

"I think they'll make the concept plan public and hopefully get some input and some enthusiasm for the park and get some additional funding to kind of maybe build the whole park," Gall said.
There will be minor tweaks to the plan based on the public input received Wednesday morning.
The next public input meeting will be held in January.
