Medina firefighters opt into early-detection cancer screenings

MEDINA, Ohio (WOIO) - Medina firefighters were screened for early cancer detection in an effort to be proactive against occupational exposure to carcinogens.

City officials say firefighters with the City of Medina Fire Department had access to the Galleri multi-cancer early detection test on September 26 and 27, made possible by a grant given to the city by a private foundation.

Every firefighter in the department took advantage of the testing, city officials say, and spouses were offered testing at a reduced fee.

"By providing these early detection cancer screenings, we have taken an important next step to ensure the long-term health of our firefighters," said Fire Chief Larry Walters.

Officials say the screening, which requires a blood draw, screens for over 50 types of cancer.

A release from the city explains why early detection is so important.

Officials say test results will be available in two to three weeks.
