Candidate forum

The Burke County Branch of the NAACP will sponsor a community candidates forum at Catawba Meadows Park, 701 Sanford Drive, Morganton, from noon until 3 p.m. There will be music, food and discussions on how to have a healthy democracy.

Fish fry

Shiloh AME Church's Men's Day Committee will sponsor a fish fry in the Shiloh Church Fellowship Hall at 11 a.m. Plates and sandwiches will be available for purchase.

Book sale

The Friends of the Burke County Public Library will host a book sale from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Collett Street Recreation Center, 300 Collett St., Morganton. Please bring bags or boxes for your purchases. Hardbacks will be $2, paperbacks will be $1 and children's books will be 50 cents. From 1-3 p.m., you can fill a brown bag with as many books as it will hold for $7.

DAR information session

The Quaker Meadows Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will hold an information session from 10 a.m. to noon at the community room a the Burke County Public Library, 204 S. King St., Morganton. Spaces are limited and reservations are recommended. Email Patricia Wells at to make a reservation or learn more.

POW/MIA Recognition

Day Ceremony

Chapter No. 43 of the Disabled American Veterans will host a Prisoner of War/Missing in Action program and ceremony in recognition of all wars at noon at 2779 DAV Ave., Morganton. The ceremony is open to the public. All veterans and family members of POW/MIAs are encouraged to attend. A light lunch will be provided at the end of the program.

Family reunion

The 26th Mosteller/Shuford Family Reunion will be held at First Baptist Church of Hildebran, 8831 Old NC 10, Hildebran, with lunch starting at 1 p.m. Bring a covered dish. An exchange table will be available for knick-knacks, books, CDs and photos. Bring something you are ready to part with and something you might treasure. Call 828-368-1613 with any questions.

Book preview reading

The Historic Burke Foundation will host a sneak peek of McDowell descendant Dr. John von Rohr's new historical fiction time travel novel that sees a 21st century academician and former military officer go back in time to Morganton in 1780, witnessing some of the most famous battles of the southern campaign of the American Revolution alongside his colonial relatives. The reading will be held at the Historic Burke County Courthouse, 102 E. Union St., Morganton, at 11 a.m. The event is free. Light refreshments will be served.

The Lake James Community Center, located near Lake James Fire Department on NC 126, will host free bingo from 6-9 p.m. at the community center. Revolutionary War Days

The Annual Revolutionary War Days will be held at the Capt. Charles McDowell House, 119 St. Mary's Church Road, Morganton, from 1-5:30 p.m. The public is invited to this free event to see demonstrations of life on the frontier in 1780 and learn about the Overmountain Men who defeated the British at Kings Mountain in a battle that turned the tide of the American Revolution. Overmountain Victory Trail Association re-enactors will observe the 50th anniversary of the annual march that commemorates this victory. Tours of the house and garden, colonial music and dancing, food, weaponry, colonial toys and games, corn husk dolls, spinning, sprang, storytelling, musket firing and special guest speakers. Hands-on activities for children and adults. The event is sponsored by Historic Burke Foundation.

NAACP Nominating

Committee meeting

The Nominating Committee of the Burke County Chapter of the NAACP will meet at 6 p.m. at Mountain View Recreation Center, 645 First St., Morganton. The committee will give a report, receive nominations by petition and elect a supervisory committee. All members whose memberships are current as of May 1 of the election year, whose memberships have remained continuous throughout the election process and who live and/or work within the unit's jurisdiction can be nominated for office or as an at-large member of the executive committee. In order to sign a nominating petition or be elected to the election supervisory committee, a member must be current at least 30 days before the October meeting.

NAACP elections

The Burke County Chapter of the NAACP will hold its election for officers and at-large members of the executive committee by electronic voting platform from 4-8 p.m. In order to vote in a branch election, one must be a member in good standing with the branch 30 days before the election. The election will be conducted electronically by the national office. Ballots will be sent electronically to the email or cellphone on record.
