Melbourne has shivered through its coldest morning of the year, with a strong high pressure system forecast to bring even more frosty mornings throughout the week ahead.

At Melbourne's Olympic Park, temperatures fell to 1C at 7.29am, making it the coldest morning of the year so far and the coldest morning since 2022, when a temperature of 0.8C was recorded.

The meteorologist Helen Reid from the Bureau of Meteorology said there had been a "run of cold mornings" across Victoria this week thanks to a ridge of high pressure over south-east Australia.

"Clear skies and light winds [have allowed] the temperature to drop right down each morning," she said.

If Melbourne continued to see mornings at or below 5C it would be the city's coldest week in 11 years, according to Weatherzone .

The Melbourne suburbs of Scoresby and Moorabbin reached roughly -1.5C on Wednesday morning while the airport dropped to -0.7C.

Temperatures fell even lower outside the capital city: the coldest was Mount Hotham, down to -5.2C, while Ballarat, the Latrobe Valley, Rutherglen, Wangaratta and East Sale were among the places to drop below -2C.

Reid said that while the mornings had been chilly and a frost warning was in place for most of the state, the BoM did not expect any location to break records.

"The rest of the week will continue to be dominated by the high pressure system, and so more clear skies and frosty mornings are expected," she said. "Maximum temperatures will be around average, or a little bit warmer in the north-east."

Sunny skies were expected across Victoria on Wednesday except for the Gippsland region, where a couple of showers could develop. For areas above 1,200 metres a "flurry of snow" may develop.

Weatherzone reported it could get cold enough for frost to form in Australia's red centre on Wednesday and Thursday, while Darwin could cool to the mid-teens on Friday.

Alice Springs airport recorded a temperature of -1.8C about 5.30am on Wednesday. The frosty conditions were expected to continue on Thursday, where a minimum temperature of -2C is forecast for the city.

Temperatures reached 1.3C at Hobart airport on Wednesday morning, with patches of morning frost forecast in the north for Thursday. Launceston airport recorded its coldest morning in five years on Tuesday, reaching -4.3C.

Adelaide also experienced a frosty morning on Wednesday, dropping to 0.5C at the airport just before 7.30am.

Canberra was set to experience patches of morning frost at the weekend, with minimum temperatures of 0C forecast.

Meanwhile, Sydney and Brisbane were in for another week of wet weather , with daily showers forecast along the east coast until at least next Wednesday. The BoM expected as much as 60mm of rain in the cities.

Perth was forecast to experience a sunny day on Wednesday, with a maximum temperature of 19C, before a bout of rain kicked in from Saturday. Showers appeared set to continue until at least next Tuesday in the western capital.
