Metacomet development plan still being discussed

(WPRI) — While many have been teeing off at the MetLinks Golf Course in East Providence, developers are still working on a plan for the remaining 70 acres.

Marshall Properties initially purchased the property years ago intending to transform it from a golf course into a shopping plaza and residential apartments .

Residents didn't like the proposal, arguing that the new development would negatively impact their neighborhood.

Marshall Properties then went back to the drawing board and decided to restore nearly half of the 18-hole golf course that already existed on the property. But what about the rest?

The East Providence Waterfront District Commission held a public hearing Thursday night on the changed proposal.

In response to concerns, officials made some changes that include adding more amenities such as electric vehicle charging stations and bike racks.

There was also a discussion of the public safety impact study. Fire Chief Michael Carey and his department reviewed it and found there would be more calls for service than the study projected, creating an additional $2.7 million for the cost of service.

The commission still needs to vote to approve the plan.
