Methacton & Upper Perk field hockey, PJP volleyball all move on to PIAA quarterfinals

Field Hockey — Class 3A

(1-5) Methacton 5, (2-1) Wyoming Valley West 1

Methacton didn't let the fact that it was the fifth District 1 entry into the PIAA 3A field dilute its confidence, as the Warriors jumped out to a 4-1 halftime lead and never looked back against host and District 2 champion Wyoming Valley West on Tuesday evening. Warriors senior Elena Weychert scored three goals and added an assist, while Adriana Hopple and Ceci Rehak added a goal and an assist each in the win. Lea DeWan also picked up an assist for Methacton, which had a decided advantage in both penalty corners (20-3) and shots on goal (24-3). Goalie Maddie McKenney made two saves for the Warriors, who advanced to Saturday's quarterfinals, where they will take on District 11 champion and defending 3A state champion Emmaus at a time and site to be determined.

(11-2) Easton 3, (1-3) Boyertown 2 (OT)

Boyertown's tremendous season came to an end in heartbreaking fashion on Tuesday night, as Easton converted a penalty corner as time expired to move on to the quarterfinals. The hosts took a 1-0 lead into halftime, but the Bears battled back with a strong start to the second half as Kendal Gilbert earned a penalty stroke that was converted by Peyton Shellaway to tie the game. Easton jumped back in front with four minutes to play in the third period and held the lead until the final seconds of the fourth quarter, when Boyertown's Elise Eves converted on a corner strike that was assisted by Shellaway. Boyertown controlled play in the overtime session but were unable to put one in the back of the cage to extend their season. Addie Galianese registered 10 saves on the night in a strong effort in goal.

Class 2A

(1-3) Upper Perkiomen 4, (11-1) Southern Lehigh 1

Upper Perk went on the road to District 11 champion Southern Lehigh and left with an impressive 4-1 win as the Indians continued their impressive late-season run following their third-place finish in District 1-2A. The triumph advanced Upper Perk to Saturday's quarterfinals, where the team will next battle with Northern York, the District 3 runner-up. The Indians will certainly have their hands filled, as Northern York is coming off a dominant 8-0 first-round win.

Girls Volleyball — Class 4A

(11-1) Bethlehem Liberty 3, (1-4) Upper Merion 2 (28-26, 22-25, 27-25, 18-25, 15-12)

Upper Merion's fantastic season came to a crushing end on Tuesday night, as the Vikings fell at District 11 champ in a five-set thriller. All five sets were close, and Liberty needed extra time to close out both the first and third games. Upper Merion senior co-captain Raven Albrecht posted a single-game school record 68 assists and also reached the 2,000-assist mark for her career, while fellow captain Sophia Schweikert ended her brilliant career with 53 kills. Valeria Paneto passed 47 serves in the marathon match, while Sydney Bright (10 kills) and Jade Webb (seven kills) each made solid contributions. The Vikings finished the season with an overall record of 23-7.

Class 3A

(1-1) Pope John Paul II 3, (12-2) Carver Engineering & Science 0 (25-10, 25-11, 25-9)

PJP's magic number for a third consecutive state championship narrowed to three as the Panthers made short work of District 12 runner-up Carver E&S on Tuesday evening. Norah Busch led Pope with 10 kills, while Maeve Gallagher added six kills, three digs and seven service points. Other Golden Panther contributors included Ava Maloney (eight kills), Emma Bond (eight digs, eight service points), Mia Mobley (six digs, 21 service points), Reece Benner (10 assists) and Kailey Hudy (14 assists). PJP advanced to Saturday's quarterfinals, where they will take on another undefeated squad in District 11 champion Southern Lehigh.

Boys Soccer — Class 4A

(11-1) Parkland 2, (1-5) Phoenixville 0

Phoenixville's 2024 season came to a close on Tuesday at District 11 champ Parkland. The Phantoms competed hard as they did all year, and the veteran squad featuring 13 seniors finished with 18 wins compared to just five losses.
