Mets offense continues torrid stretch in emphatic win

When the New York Mets scored 10 runs on Tuesday and then repeated the feat on Wednesday, many people didn't think much of it because both games were against a non-contender, the Washington Nationals.

However, those same people are now clapping their hands as the Mets scored 10 runs for a third consecutive game, this time against a team vying for home-field advantage in the postseason: the Philadelphia Phillies.

That's right, the Mets won 10-6 on Thursday night at Citi Field and kept the gap between them and the Atlanta Braves for the Wild Card spot at two games. New York is tied with the Arizona Diamondbacks for the second Wild Card and just two games behind the San Diego Padres for the first.

The Mets have been fortunate enough to say "No Francisco Lindor, no problem." The star shortstop hasn't played at all this week, yet the team has not lost.

The Mets have won seven of their last 10 and four in a row heading into Friday. They are red-hot, determined to make it to October.

On Thursday, all starter Luis Severino needed to do was make a quality start. He allowed three runs in six innings of work, and due to the Mets' newest offensive explosion, that was more than enough.

Never in the Mets' rich 63-year history had they scored 10 or more runs in three consecutive games, until this week.

Mark Vientos, Pete Alonso, Brandon Nimmo, and Francisco Alvarez all homered off Taijuan Walker to set the pace for the night and give the team its 16th win in the last 20 games.

Make no mistake: the Mets are, without a doubt, the hottest team in baseball. There is no other way around it. And they are determined to lock up one of the three NL Wild Card spots.
