Did New York Mets owner Steve Cohen not believe?

According to The New York Post , Cohen ended up watching the end of the Mets' Thursday thriller — which featured Pete Alonso's Mets moment — like the rest of America (aside from the 41,594 at American Family Field): on television.

"Soak it up," Steve Cohen told Alonso after, the owner admitting he'd already made his way to the clubhouse to offer condolences and so heard the reaction to the home run before he actually saw it 7 seconds later on TV. "Great players rise to the occasion."

To be fair to Cohen, he likely wanted to be in the clubhouse when his Mets returned following Game 3 of the Wild Card Series against the Milwaukee Brewers. He wanted to show up and tell his employees (players and coaching and front office staff alike) that he was proud of them — the organization was moving in the right direction, a message that has taken on new meaning after now reaching the NL Division Series.

According to ESPN Analytics' win probability , the Mets had a 17% chance to win when Brandon Nimmo singled directly before Alonso's home run

And then more magic happened.

Down to their final five outs, a struggling Alonso stepped to the plate and sailed a go-ahead, three-run home run against one of baseball's best closers, Devin Williams. The Mets, with two hits (both from Francisco Lindor), would not go down without a fight. They scored another run and pitcher David Peterson recorded his first save to send them to the NL Division Series.

"How about that finish! Hollywood couldn't write a better script," Cohen wrote to X early Friday . "So proud of this team. Onward to Philly."
