Mets rookie infielder keeps leaving his mark in the team’s playoff push

New York Mets rookie shortstop Luisangel Acuña grew up in a baseball family. There was a keen interest in the sport in his household, and his brother Ronald is one of MLB's biggest stars today.

But he is determined to write his own story and to follow his own path. The Mets only recently called him up, and he is making sure to leave his mark and help as they seek to secure a place in the postseason.

On Wednesday, the Mets scored 10 runs for the second consecutive game. They also won for the second straight night, and Acuña hit a home run for, you guessed it, the second contest in a row .

Acuña gave the Mets another stellar performance

The infielder went 2-for-4 with a homer, two runs, and two RBI to lift his batting average to .467 and his OPS to 1.400 in five games since making his MLB debut. Of the seven hits he has accumulated so far in his short MLB career (in just 15 at-bats!), three have gone for extra bases; a double and the two round-trippers.

Luisangel doesn't quite have his brother's upside, but almost no one has and that doesn't mean he can't be an impactful major leaguer. In fact, the Mets have been getting top production from him and it's hard to say they regret calling him up when he has been so good.

If anything, Acuña offers some pop, game-changing speed, and upside. The Mets can certainly use those traits, at least while Francisco Lindor is out. Nobody knows what the Mets will do when Lindor is ready to return from his back issue, which could be any day now even though he is not in Thursday's lineup.

Maybe they find another position to play Acuña, or perhaps they send him down again. What we know to this point is that he is playing at a very high level, and he is giving the veteran enough time to recover at his own pace and not be rushed back. That is extremely valuable.
