South Florida housing costs are among the highest in the country, and home ownership remains financially out of reach for many. The rising price of everyday goods makes sticker shock at the checkout counter an all-too-common experience.

This fall, the Miami Herald brought on a new journalist specifically dedicated to covering these pocketbook issues. Affordability, upward mobility and quality of life will be at the heart of this coverage.

Max Klaver is the Herald's new economic mobility reporter, a position made possible by more than 15 local contributors in partnership with Journalism Funding Partners . Major supporters include local philanthropist Ken O'Keefe and the Green Family Foundation Trust. The Miami Herald retains editorial control.

A Philadelphia native, Klaver comes to Miami after a two-year stint in Buenos Aires, where he covered Argentina's cost-of-living crisis, inflation and the 2023 general election for the Buenos Aires Herald, the Economist and the Christian Science Monitor, among others.
