Miami QB Tyler Van Dyke to enter NCAA transfer portal

Miami’s long time starting quarterback is moving on after four years in Coral Gables. InsideTheU and 247Sports learned that Tyler Van Dyke plans to enter the transfer portal with one year of eligibility.

The 6-foot-4, 225-pounder had an up and down career with Miami, emerging on the scene in relief of an injured D’Eriq King during the 2021 season. In his first start, at home against NC State, Van Dyke called his shot in his first media appearance and erupted with 325 yards and four touchdowns through the air in a late October win.

He finished the year tossing for 2931 yards with 25 touchdowns to six interceptions. After the season offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee left to be the head coach at SMU and head coach Manny Diaz was fired. His 2022 campaign, the first under Mario Cristobal and former offensive coordinator Josh Gattis , was disappointing, resulting in a few benchings and a shoulder injury. Van Dyke finished the season with just ten touchdown passes and five interceptions and the Hurricanes missed bowl eligibility after totaling just five wins.

Last off-season, Cristobal went out and hired former Houston offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson to help get the most out of Van Dyke. But this fall had more downs than ups as well. An early season offensive eruption against Texas A&M in which Van Dyke threw for 374 yards and five touchdowns with no interceptions, had many feeling like the struggles of 2022 were behind him.

With a 11-1 touchdown to interception ratio, the first signs of Van Dyke’s string of struggles came about in a three touchdown loss to Georgia Tech. That began a string of performances which resulted in ten interceptions over a span of four starts.

Van Dyke was benched against Florida State, but needed to play one final drive after freshman Emory Williams was injured late in the fourth quarter. He went on to start the final two games of Miami’s season against Louisville and Boston College.

In three seasons as Miami’s quarterback, the Connecticut native totaled 7469 passing yards with 54 touchdowns to 23 interceptions while completing 63.7 percent of his throws.

The Hurricanes currently have two scholarship quarterbacks on the roster between the injured Williams, who won't be back until the spring at the earliest due to the injury suffered against Florida State, and redshirt freshman Jacurri Brown .
