ANN ARBOR, MI — U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell is on her way to serving a sixth term in Congress.

The Ann Arbor Democrat had 61.6% of the vote in a four-way race in Michigan's 6th Congressional District with 60% of votes tallied, the Associated Press reported.

The vote count is 183,802 for Dingell and 106,349 for Republican Heather Smiley, 4,534 for Green Party candidate Clyde Shabazz and 3,900 for Libertarian Bill Krebaum.

Dingell was first elected in 2014 to represent Michigan's old 12th Congressional District, taking over for her husband, the late John Dingell, who served nearly six decades in Congress.

She moved from Dearborn to Ann Arbor in 2022 to run in the newly drawn 6th District, which includes much of her old district, netting 66% of the vote that year.

The solidly Democratic district covers all of Washtenaw County, including Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, Saline, Chelsea, Dexter and Milan, and stretches east to Downriver communities such as Grosse Ile, Trenton, Riverview, Woodhaven and Gibraltar.

It also includes communities such as Belleville, Canton, Plymouth, Northville and Novi.

In a statement posted on social media on Tuesday, Nov. 5, Dingell said, "Today we have a choice between unity and division, between peace and chaos, between freedom and authoritarianism. Your vote is your voice, and it's more important than ever to make your voice heard."

She was looking forward to calling Kamala Harris and Tim Walz the nation's next president and vice president, she added.

She said on the campaign trail she loves her district and representing the people in it and understands the importance of building coalitions, listening to different perspectives and bringing everyone to the table to try to find common ground, saying bipartisanship and compromise are not dirty words.
