Michigan jumps in the college football polls after win over Ohio State

E.Wright3 months ago
Michigan has leapfrogged Ohio State in the rankings and reclaimed its No. 2 spot following a win over the arch-rival Buckeyes on Saturday.

The 12-0 Wolverines will enter the week as the second-best team in the country in the AP Top 25 and US LBM coaches’ polls, both unveiled Sunday, behind No. 1 Georgia. It’s a spot Michigan held for the first 11 weeks of the season, until a narrow victory over Maryland dropped the team a spot.

But a win over Ohio State on Saturday, 30-24, was enough to convince voters that the Big Ten East Division champions deserve that spot again. Michigan received 10 first-place votes in the AP poll this week and four among the coaches, still leaving a sizable gap between the No. 1 and 2 spots.

The College Football Playoff poll is due out at 7 p.m. Tuesday, setting the stage for championship weekend around college football.

Michigan will play Iowa, ranked No. 18 in this week’s AP poll, on Saturday in the Big Ten title game in Indianapolis (8 p.m., FOX).

There was additional movement at the top of both polls, with Washington climbing up to No. 3 following a win over rival Washington State. Florida State remains at No. 4. Ohio State fell to No. 6 in both polls.

Rounding out the top 10 was Oregon (No. 5), Texas (7), Alabama (8), Missouri (9) and Penn State (10), the only other Big Ten team to be ranked.

Michigan is expected to rise in this week’s CFP ranking to No. 2. If that holds and Jim Harbaugh’s team captures its third straight Big Ten championship (it enters Saturday’s game as 23-point favorites , per oddsmakers), the Wolverines will earn their third consecutive playoff berth.
