OpenAI developed the key generative artificial-intelligence technology that helped give Microsoft a healthy lead in the biggest tech race in years. After OpenAI’s board ousted co-founder and CEO Sam Altman on Friday and his weekend efforts to return to the company fell apart, Microsoft hired Altman and other pivotal OpenAI figures to lead an advanced AI research team. WSJ’s Dan Gallagher, who covers technology for Heard on the Street, spoke about how the move could play out for the tech giant .Gallagher: Microsoft is one of the largest companies on the planet, with a market capitalization approaching $3 trillion. But its major bet on generative artificial intelligence has deeply intertwined its fate with that of a seven-year-old Silicon Valley startup with a volatile management structure. Hiring Sam Altman was the best move Microsoft could have made under the circumstances, given that the $13 billion it has invested into OpenAI so far gave it no actual say in how the company was run. Having Altman and other OpenAI talent in house would give Microsoft more control over what is a key foundational technology for its future.
