Midlander Drake Vliem II and Drew Haas win Netflix’s ‘Outlast’ survival competition
Midlander Drake Vliem II and Drew Haas of Hallettsville won "Outlast," Netflix's million-dollar survival competition.
"Outlast" is a reality competition survival series that places 16 survivalists in the Alaskan wilderness to compete for a $1 million cash prize. There is a catch: survivalists must work in teams to win.
According to Netflix, Haas, a commercial pilot, was the first to pick a teammate for the Bravo Camp. Haas chose Vliem, who is an oilfield technician.
The Texan duo dived into the competition, attempting to outlast other teams and surviving off the Alaskan land with limited supplies.
The winners of the competition were revealed in the season finale of Outlast, which premiered on Sept. 11. The cash prize was split into two and Vliem and Haas each received $500,000.
According to Netflix, Vliem and Haas formed a bromance during their time working together to survive.
Vliem told Netflix that he planned to pay off property debt, buy a new boat and set up accounts for his children with his prize money. Vliem returned to work in the field within 36 hours of being back home with his family.
Midland High School congratulated their 2012 alumnus Vliem on Facebook for winning the competition with his teammate.
The city of Midland also congratulated Vliem for winning and representing Midland.
Midlanders were very excited to see that Vliem secured his win on Outlast and congratulated him by commenting on both Midland High's and the city of Midland's social media posts.
"It's safe to say Drake Vliem II deserves the keys to the city for this one!" commented Facebook user Gage Hopson on the city of Midland's post.
"Living in Midland probably prepared him for that win. I'm kidding... KIDDING!!! That's amazing!!" commented Jennifer Sanchez under the city of Midland's post.
"He is such a wonderful guy, I'm so proud of him." commented Facebook user Caitlyn Dougherty.
