Mike Williams becomes Steelers' hero with game-winning TD grab in first game
R.Taylor24 hr ago
LANDOVER, Md. - Mike Williams had been with the Pittsburgh Steelers for just five days before he played against the Washington Commanders . The initial plan for Wiliams was to play in specific spots and more importantly, just play 15 or so snaps. However, Williams was thrust into action when Calvin Austin III went down on the final drive after hauling in a pass from Russell Wilson. The Steelers not only had to put Williams in all the spots that Austin would play, but had to tell him the plays ahead of time. Russell Wilson would pull Williams over to tell him where to line up and what to run on a given play. On his touchdown, it worked to perfection. Williams ran a simple go route, but Wilson layered it to the pylon, and Williams hauled it in. So, how many times did Williams actually practice his game-winning touchdown? The answer is simple - none. "None, I didn't run it one time," Williams said. Based on the defensive back's alignment, he thought the ball would come his way pre-snap. So, Williams made all of that count. "I kinda had an idea," Williams said. "It wasn't aligned for me to be over there, he told me to go over there, so I kinda had an idea that the ball was going to be up. So, I ran the route and just checked in the air and caught the ball." That was Williams' first target of the entire game. With tougher tests on the schedule, the Steelers will need Williams' contested-catch skills to spark the offense. If he can make plays like that, the Steelers will be happy to continue throwing him those exact balls. Wilson has developed trust in Williams already, and it seems that will only grow over time.
