Mira Costa’s Taylor Deckert selected to Under Armour All-America girls volleyball game
Taylor Deckert has been a fixture with the Mira Costa girls volleyball team.
The senior libero, who is headed to USC, was selected to the Under Armour All-America game that will be played next month in Orlando, Fla.
"I'm so excited," she said after helping Mira Costa to a sweep Tuesday of Redondo. "To be one of those players selected, I'm so honored."
Deckert was presented with her Under Armour jersey before the start of the match against Redondo.
Her volleyball journey started early.
"Probably my whole life," she said. "My mom played and dad also plays for fun, so it's kind of been my whole life and I started playing club when I was around 9.
"This program is one of the best in the country and I'm really honored to be a part of it. I wanted to compete for my spot. I when did get my spot and I just wanted to keep growing for my team and help my team."
Deckert has been a calming influence for the Mustangs this season, which is helpful because she's usually the only senior on the court.
"I think she's the leader (in calming) because she's always like that," Mira Costa coach Cam Green said of Deckert.
Deckert's volleyball career will take her to USC after high school.
"I'm so excited and it's super nice and calming to know where I'm going," she said. "I'm going (to enroll) early in January to get a head start and start training with the team."
Deckert and the Mustangs are waiting for Saturday's release of the CIF-Southern Section playoff pairings. The Mustangs have advanced to the last two CIF-SS Division 1 finals.
Deckert has also helped the Mira Costa girls beach volleyball team win the first two official CIF-SS championships.
"Taking it one match at time," Deckert said of the key of the upcoming playoffs. "Not looking at the end result, just looking at what's in front of us."
