Nov. 17—PIERRE — A Mitchell man has been sentenced to five years in federal prison for assaulting a federal law enforcement officer.

Dustin Todd Long, age 38, was sentenced to five years in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release, and ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for South Dakota.

Long was indicted by a federal grand jury in September 2023 on charges related to assaulting, resisting and impeding a federal officer. He pleaded guilty on Aug. 14 and was sentenced on Tuesday, Nov. 12.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, the conviction stems from Long pointing a handgun toward Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services officers after refusing to obey their commands in Eagle Butte, South Dakota.

During the incident, Long waved the handgun around while walking toward Main Street, where he continued to ignore commands to drop the firearm. After Long was apprehended, law enforcement was able to determine that the firearm was unloaded.

Long was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.

Pete Hegseth, Donald Trump's pick for defense secretary, paid a woman who accused him of sexual assault in 2017 as part of a settlement agreement, an attorney for Hegseth said in a statement on Saturday. Tim Parlatore, a lawyer for the former Fox News star, said in the statement that Hegseth settled in December 2020 only because he feared his career would suffer if her allegations were made public. Parlatore said Hegseth was the victim of "blackmail" and "false claims of sexual assault" by an unidentified woman after a Republican women's convention in California on Oct. 7, 2017.
