CENTERVILLE, Ohio (WDTN) — A screening event is happening today in Centerville for National Mammography Day.

Experts say that early detection is pivotal and new technology has made detection more concrete earlier than ever before.

Starting from the 1960s and onward, technology has made major strides as radiologists went from using general purpose X-Ray tubes without compression, to using screen film for mammographs in the 70s. Most evaluations started utilizing digital mammography at the start of the 2000s.

This form of screening is what's used today and will be featured at the Mobile Mammogram Office. The mobile office will be parked outside of Bob Ross Buick today.

The office may be relatively small, but its leaving a large impact on the community.

"I will say the first lady I ever screened about five years ago, the mobile unit with this 3D technology was able to detect the very early lead breast cancer in a patient who found out she had stage zero breast cancer and the mobile unit mammogram unit. I actually caught that for her," said Sybil Martin, executive director of the Norma J. Foundation.

Women aged 25 to 39 are recommended to undergo a screening every 1 to 3 years. Women 40 and over are advised to seek an examination annually.

The National Breast Cancer Foundation says that 1 in 8 women in the United States will receive a breast cancer diagnosis within her lifetime. 2024 estimates suggest that over 310,000 women and over 2,000 men will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer.
