If you've lived in the region for a while, you know that frequent wildfires rage through the state to disrupt our lives. Here in Los Alamos, Cerro Grande (May – July, 2000) and Las Conchas (June – August, 2011) evacuated the town. And Cerro Pelado (April 22 – June 2022) required evacuation of the vulnerable population in Aspen Ridge and Sombrillo.
Note the dates. Right around Primary Election time. Unless you're voting absentee, you can only vote in person within your County/City's boundaries. Because of the increasing frequency of catastrophic fires in every season, and because the County Clerk is committed to ensuring each voter has access to a secure and convenient voting center—even during emergencies—County Clerk Naomi Maestas, her staff, and Emergency Services Commander Beverley Simpson worked for grants to buy a Mobile Voting Unit (MVU), a unit that could be located within the County but outside of the evacuation zone. And we could vote. Because voting is our right and duty as Americans.
This week poll workers set up the MVU at Aspen Ridge on Monday/Tuesday; Sullivan Field Wednesday/Thursday, and Smiths on Friday/Saturday.
Voting Day is Tuesday Nov. 5.
