Moderate freeze advisory issued for Northeastern Pennsylvania, gardeners warned

B.Lee32 min ago

A moderate freeze advisory has been issued for several counties across North Eastern Pennsylvania with night temperatures dipping into the 30's.

Not properly protecting your plants during freeze or frost advisories can result in plants or crops dying overnight.

The significantly colder temperatures has put a haunt to growing season for many farmers.

In preparation for the colder weather farmers have been forced to pick a majority of their crops that don't fair well in cold weather as quickly as possible specifically tomatoes and and corn.

For small gardeners and plant lovers, Gary O'Malia a local farmer and owner of Larry O'Mallia's Farm and Greenhouses says that outdoor plants must be covered during these colder temperatures.

"With plants if you have fall mins outside, it's a good idea to bring them inside for the night, if not, if they're planted in the ground, cover them with an old bed sheet like a cotton bed sheet," O'Malia said.

O'Malia says that oftentimes people will use plastic to cover their plants and protect them from the cold, but this isn't a very good idea.

Using plastic to cover the plants could transfer the cold temperatures.

Condensation could happen under the plastic and could freeze, still damaging the plants

O'Malia says that a cardboard box will also work to protect your outdoors plants. Properly protecting your outdoor plants could result in plant lovers having their fall flowers for at least 2 to 3 weeks longer.
