A house fire on Hillview Lane in Melcroft left six people and three dogs without a home.

"We were called to a two-story house fire (Monday) morning, and on our arrival the fire was fully engulfed in the back side of the house," said Jerry Gales, chief of the Saltlick Township Volunteer Fire Company.

Gales said the first was in an addition that was attached to the main part of the home.

He said firefighters were able to make it to the scene "within minutes" of getting the phone call at approximately 4:10 a.m., but when they arrived the back of the home was already beginning to collapse, classifying the home as a total loss.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown, but Gales said that the state police fire marshal is investigating.

Fire officials said there were no injuries and the six people along with the three dogs are being assisted by the American Red Cross.
