ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) – There is a significant step forward for those facing eviction in Monroe County with a new initiative to get residents the support they need in one place.

It's called the Eviction Diversion Resource Center, and is now only the second of its kind in New York State.

Soon, tenants facing eviction will be to find a variety of resources at the Hall of Justice to help them maintain housing stability for the future.

"The center is designed to meet residents where they are right here in the Hall of Justice. Meeting people at the courthouse, we're bringing people help to those who need it most, and exactly when and where they need it," said Monroe Co. Executive Adam Bello.

There, tenants will be able to meet with trained professionals to fill out rental service applications and apply for additional supports like SNAP benefits, transportation, and child care.

It's made possible through a partnership between Monroe County and city court judges.

"Our mission, of course, is justice for all and fulfilling that mission in this courthouse, we never forget the work we do as judges and court staff. It impacts peoples' lives and some of the most important work we do is to help people solve problems and that's really what this is all about," said City Court Judge William Taylor.

"The eviction diversion resource center will serve as a hub for assistance. People who arrive at the justice center will be able to apply for services that may help them remain in their home all before leaving the courthouse," said Thalia Wright, commissioner for Monroe Co.'s Department of Human Services.

"It's our hope others across the state will follow our lead because it really is helping residents be able to stay in their homes," said Bello.

The resource center will be staffed by the Dept. of Human Services and will be open during business hours on Mondays and Fridays.
